What is the Dark Web? (Part 1)

Forget hidden figures operating from shadowy basements. The dark web isn’t actually dark; It’s not secret, nor is it particularly difficult to access. Instead, the dark web is a popular digital marketplace used by people from around the world to exchange payments, goods, and services. In fact, modern criminal operations don’t always even bother with the “dark” side at all. Some social media platforms have become a more inclusive meeting ground where criminals can connect to learn, plan, and stay ahead of the curve.

In PART 1: Intro to the Dark Web, we discuss:

  1. How criminals access it
  2. How money moves
  3. Why the dark web works
  4. Why it matters to your business

Brett Johnson

Chief Criminal Officer, Arkose Labs, Keynote Speaker. Consultant, Podcast Host, Cybercrime, Identity Theft, Cybersecurity Expert

Former United States Most Wanted, referred to by the United States Secret Service as “The Original Internet Godfather” has been a central figure in the cybercrime world for over 20 years. Mr. Johnson built and was the leader of ShadowCrew, the precursor to today’s darknet markets. He was instrumental in developing many areas of online fraud while helping design, implement, and refine modern social engineering attacks, breaches, and hacking operations.

Upon his capture, the United States Secret Service hired Mr. Johnson to work as a consultant and worked with the Secret Service for several months before going on a cross-country crime spree, being placed on the US Most Wanted List, captured again, sent to prison, escaped again, recaptured, and finally accepting responsibility for his actions.

Today, Brett works as a security consultant and public speaker and is one of the world's foremost authorities on cybercrime and identity theft. Brett has been featured in the book, "Kingpin" by Kevin Poulsen and on numerous media outlets, including the New York Times, NBC, CNN Money, Wired Magazine, Vice, and more.
